Kokedama Climbing plant

What is kokedama?

It's an old Japanese technique that is now spreading around the world as a decorative alternative to classic pots. The plant grows directly in a ball of substrate and peat moss, which retains moisture while still letting the roots breathe.

How do you care for it?

1. Watering by soaking – submerge the kokedama in a bowl of water once every 1–2 weeks for 10–15 minutes, until the moss stops bubbling. Then let it drain.
2. Light – most suitable plants prefer a bright spot out of direct sunlight. North- or west-facing windows are ideal, or a spot 1–2 metres from a window.
3. Air humidity – Czech flats tend to have dry air in winter because of heating. Mist the moss regularly with a spray bottle, or stand the kokedama on a tray of pebbles and water.
4. Temperature – ideally 18–24 °C year-round. Don't place the kokedama in a draught or next to cold windows in winter.
5. Fertilizing – once every 4–6 weeks, add a houseplant liquid fertiliser at half strength to the watering bowl.
6. Renewing the moss – after 1–2 years the moss may start to dry out or grow mould. Simply replace it with fresh peat moss – the plant will stay healthy.
